Turning the 3 Pillars—Marketing, Accounting, and Production—Into Repeatable Routines(without adding more work)

You've done the hard part—you're running a construction business, getting jobs, and turning out quality work. Perhaps you've even begun to refine your marketing, job costing, and project delivery strategies, thanks to the three pillars we've discussed: Attracting the Right Jobs, Controlling the Money, and Delivering Projects Profitably.

But here's the next step that will take your business from reactive to reliable, from "just getting by" to scaling sustainably:

You need systems.

A Construction Bookkeeper's Guide to Smarter Production for Small Contractors

You've done the hard work: marketed your services, landed the job, and priced it to make a solid profit. But here's where a lot of small construction businesses lose money—even after doing everything right up to this point.

That moment is project execution—or what we in the business world call production.

As construction bookkeeping specialists, we've seen many jobs transition from profitable to painful simply because the contractor lacked systems in place to track costs, manage scope, or control labor once the work commenced.

Let's discuss Pillar 3: Delivering Projects Profitably, and how refining your production process can safeguard your profits, enhance your reputation, and alleviate stress.

How Smart Money Management Keeps Your Business Profitable and Stress-Free

When most small construction business owners think about success, they envision a steady stream of jobs, high-quality work, and satisfied clients. But there’s another side to the story that often gets ignored: the financial health of your business.

And here’s the truth we see every day as construction bookkeeping specialists: Even skilled contractors with full calendars can run into cash flow problems, tax stress, or profit shortfalls—not because of the work, but because of the numbers.

That’s where Pillar 2: Controlling the Money comes in. In this post, we’ll talk about how to take control of your finances through simple, construction-friendly accounting practices—so you can stop guessing and start growing.

Pillar 1: Marketing - Attracting The Right Construction Jobs

A Guide for Small Construction Business Owners (from Your Bookkeeper's Point of View)

As construction bookkeeping specialists, we spend a significant amount of time analyzing the numbers behind small construction businesses—everything from job costs to cash flow to profit margins. However, here's the truth most contractors don't hear enough: Your profitability starts before the job even begins.

Yes, it starts with the jobs you say yes to—and more importantly, the ones you should start saying no to. In this post, we'll break down what it means to attract the right jobs, how doing so can transform your business, and what practical steps you can take today to stop chasing work that doesn't serve you.

First, Why Most Contractors Struggle to Attract the Right Clients

Small contractors often accept every job that comes their way, especially when they're just starting or concerned about cash flow. But this creates several problems:

  • Low-paying work that barely covers your costs
  • Clients who delay payment or constantly push scope boundaries
  • Traveling too far for small, unprofitable jobs
  • A lack of consistency in your portfolio and referrals

Overcoming Contractor Marketing Challenges

Posted by Norhalma Verzosa on Fri, Nov 13, 2020

Now that the internet has become an integral part of our daily lives, modern consumers no longer depend on television, radio, and print advertisements. We look and go through a plethora of information first, accessed through popular search engines (Google, Bing, and others), before deciding to make a purchase or hire a local service.

Technology advancement allowed companies to promote and connect with a larger number of potential consumers than the traditional, physical presence of a brick-and-mortar store. As a contractor, you are no longer confined to your neighborhood and push services directly to them. Your online presence enables you to reach out and pull qualified leads towards your construction company. But what should you do when you don't have a marketing manager that handles this side of your business? I say work with what you already have and go from there.

Increase Traffic And 30 Content Ideas For Construction Blogs

Posted by Norhalma Verzosa on Fri, Jun 14, 2019

Go through a quick search of construction/home service-based businesses near you, whether it’s a Handyman, Plumber, Painter, or a Framing company, or better yet google your competition and look at their information. Does it link to their websites? And if so, do they maintain a blog?

How many people, including you, search the web for information before making a decision – buying equipment, booking a hotel, or eating at a restaurant? While a company website establishes your credibility as an industry leader, blogging presents an excellent opportunity for you to develop a relationship with your audience, strengthens your reputation as an authority in your field, and helps you stand out from the competition. You care enough to provide your prospects and followers relevant and useful information that they can practice and apply.

When creating content, ask yourself these questions:

• What is the purpose of this blog post?
• Am I adding value?
• Why is this important to my readers?

Free Offline Marketing Ideas For Brand New Contractors

Posted by Norhalma Verzosa on Tue, May 14, 2019

Yes, I know, as a Web Content Developer and Fast Easy Accounting’s resident Webmaster, this blog post could come quite a surprise to you but bear with me on this. I realized that writing about Online Marketing Trends and the power of Inbound Marketing doesn’t obviously support a more traditional way of marketing, but I am taking this topic head on to bring you a different point of view. In this day and age, despite the steady growth of the web, still, about 10% of U.S. adults do not use the internet - that means not all your target clients are online. This is an opportunity for you to implement some offline marketing methods to add to your overall promotional strategy.

If you’re just establishing your contracting business, have no office support or crew to assist you, and looking for ways to promote your company without spending a lot of money in advertising costs, then this could be the answer you’re looking for. If you’re a seasoned contractor and just want to do more networking in your spare time, this can also work for your company. Notice I mentioned “free” – however, this is going to cost you a bit (or more) of your time and effort (perhaps gas). Consider having a marketing budget if you want to take it up a notch and optimize your plan. For now, take out those box of business cards and shove it in your glove box and let’s get rolling:

Inbound marketing is about creating valuable experiences that have a positive impact on people and your business. How do you do that? You attract prospects and customers to your website and blog through relevant and helpful content. Once they arrive, you engage with them using conversational tools like email and chat and by promising continued value. And finally, you delight them by continuing to act as an empathetic advisor and expert. - HubSpot

Whether someone found you via a referral, word of mouth, or through the search engine results page, chances are not all of them will contact you instantly. Most likely, people will check and do online research of your credentials and the company's credibility. That is what your website is for. Why should a reader choose your plumbing company? Can the site visitor afford your services? What are their options? It could be as simple as someone looking for faucet repairs, and you only do brand new installations. Your website will provide essential details about your business, plus it can also screen clients for you based on the information you provided. Serving both ways - win!

You probably spend most of your working hours at the construction site but understand that your prospective clients (and former ones) are spending their time on your business site. Your online presence makes you a trusted source and a reliable expert to go to and come back to all the time.
