Construction Company Bookkeeping For Contractors All Across The USA Including Alaska And Hawaii

Contractor or Bookkeeper - Pick One

When A Serious Job Site Injury Happens Who Did You Call?

You didn't call the roofer, the plumber or the electrician to perform medical services. You didn't surf the web to find the cheapest medical service available. You don't expect your truck mechanic to prepare your tax returns. Of course not because that's not their area of expertise.

Can someone please tell me and everyone is on earth, why so many contractors think they can be experts at remodeling, building, service work and construction bookkeeping when it is so expensive for them to do it?

Because when you attempt to do your own bookkeeping every little piece of paper and online document has a story behind it and you have to stop and think about it even if it is just a few seconds. The distractions drive you crazy, your cell phone rings, somebody comes to visit, the kids are screaming and a bunch of other distractions and you still need to get a bid proposal put together. Finally nothing goes into QuickBooks like it is supposed too!

By the time you are finished with bookkeeping you are too tired, angry and frustrated to look at the reports you need to operate and grow your business.

Too often those who attempt it produce mediocre results everywhere because they are trying to work in two different areas of their brain, Tangible and Intangible.

Tangible Work Is External - It involves working with people and things that can be seen, heard, touched, tasted and smelled:

  1. People, employees, customers, suppliers, vendors, engineers, etc.
  2. Lumber, concrete, steel, pipe, wire, drywall, paint, etc.
  3. Earth, wind, fire and water

Your Job Is - To orchestrate the labor and materials and form a three dimensional object that can be seen, heard, touched, tasted and smelled and used for residential, commercial or industrial purposes:

Intangible Work Is Internal - It involves working with concepts and ideas that can only be experienced in someone's mind:

  1. Bookkeeping, payroll, payroll and sales tax reports, invoicing and cash flow management
  2. Business planning, forecasting, marketing, lead generation, retirement planning
  3. Business process management, business process improvement

Our Job Is - To orchestrate a bookkeeping system using labor and equipment to form a two dimensional object that can only be seen and is used to help you navigate your construction business upon The River Of Commerce and guide it to a pleasant and profitable destination.

The Results We Have Witnessed When Contractors Try To Do It All Are:

  1. Health Issues - Nervous disorders, stress, heart-attacks and strokes
  2. Mental Issues - Burn out, paranoia, conspiracy theorists
  3. Physical And Mental - Substance abuse, alcohol, drugs or worse
  4. Burn Out - Which means being a burden instead of a supporter
  5. Destroyed Relationships - With friends, family, employees and suppliers

We thoroughly enjoy working with owners of small construction companies who are just getting started or have been in it for a very long time because we were contractors for a very long time ourselves and tried to do and be everything.

When we had our construction businesses we hired bookkeepers to work for us in our office which is why I write so extensively about Incompetent Bookkeepers and Bad Bookkeepers and damage they cause in the lives, families, marriages of employees and suppliers of so many construction businesses.

I have a background in accounting having went to college for it in the 1970's before starting my first construction firm and after buying and selling houses, it is called "flipping houses" these days. Even back then I knew better than to do my own bookkeeping and annual income tax return.

We have outsourced our annual tax return to professional income tax preparers since before flipping houses. Choose your bookkeeping, accounting and annual tax preparers wisely because each one is a specialty of its own. Finally, really do consider putting together a Board of Advisors and we can assist you with that.
