"If You Know The Answers - The questions will not bother you"
Most Construction Workers - And technicians in any field, especially computer networking technicians, are conditioned to fix things that are broken and to respond to emergencies. Their comfort zone can be defined with the following statements:
- If it isn’t broke, I don’t fix it
- When I fix things, I am a hero
- After it deteriorates into an emergency; then I fix it
- People wait on me to arrive, and make my grand entrance
- I gain recognition from those who serve me; everyone serves me
- I am indispensable; the world revolves around my technical prowess
- If I want something done right I have to do it myself, because everybody else is stupid
- I do not listen to others because of I am “Infantile Omnipotent” and as such, I am law unto myself
- I do not read the instructions; I figure things out for myself; the hard way
- Paperwork is for sissies, real men, important men, cannot be bothered with paperwork
- Nothing is ever my fault, so I am free to repeat the same mistakes over and over and over
- I hate boredom and predictability; so I mix things up a bit and break things to make life interesting
- Finally, I love being in control so that I can create a little chaos and make people jump
Construction Workers - And technicians are wonderful people who are able to think fast on their feet and they have a superior problem solving skills. They become conditioned by the nature of the environment they work in to become mavericks, cowboys and superheroes that wait for an emergency before acting.
If You Watch Closely - When they get a service request, job ticket, set of construction drawings, and this applies to all technicians in all fields, not just construction workers, you will witness first hand their adrenaline levels start to rise, their posture straightens up, the pupils of their eyes will become slightly smaller and tighten up as their mental focus sharpens all in preparation to make a unconscious decision in their primal instincts of fight or flight.
Something You Need - To be aware is when the primeval “fight or flight” syndrome is takes over a decision is being made to either do the job, “fight”, or give it to someone else, “flight”. If the job is accepted their self-worth is on the line and there is no time for planning, preparation or reading the directions because the battle between has begun. This may not be the best profile for a management position.
Michael Gerber - Author of The E-Myth said:
“To The Entrepreneur, the business is the product. As far as the technician is concerned, the product is what he delivers to the consumer. So the consumer is always a problem for The Technician because the consumer never seems to want what he has to offer. To The Entrepreneur, however, the client is always an opportunity because within the client is a continuing parade of wants begging to be satisfied. All The Entrepreneur has to do is find out what they are. As a result, the world is a continuing surprise, a treasure hunt. To The Technician, the world is a place that never seems to let him do what he wants to do; it rarely applauds his efforts.”
He Goes On To Say - "The question then becomes how can we introduce the Entrepreneurial Model to The Technician in such a way that he can understand it and utilize it? The answer is; we can’t. The Technician isn’t interested.”
